Trace chemicals and reproductive health

Yesterday's Chemical & Engineering News has a great article about how environmental contaminants are causing infertility, declining sperm counts, miscarriages, and birth defects. This serves as a great introduction into our class topic! Give it a read and please comment.

I thought the article was very interesting, but didn't like that the support for its argument was mostly done with animal research. Applying rat and mice responses and consequences of exposures to chemicals cannot be paralled to humans. There are too many other factors to consider. Especially, that the chemicals leaking into the environment are not the only source of contamination. For instance the article mentions that many baby products contain phthalates and BPAs. Therefore, instead of banning trace chemicals (where their effects on humans may or may not be detrimental) we should stop their usage in baby products as a caution , until more conclusive evidence is found.
